The Absolute Fencing Chicago Sabre World Cup

More than 300 fencers from 30 countries will do battle at the Absolute Fencing Chicago Sabre World Cup from Friday through Sunday, May 3 through 5, at the University of Illinois at Chicago Flames Athletic Center, 839 W. Roosevelt Rd.
The only stop on the international World Cup circuit to be held in the United States, this event will feature Olympic and world champion fencers from countries including the United States, Italy, Russia, China, Korea, Ukraine, Hungary, and France.

“I’m excited not only to have the opportunity to bring an event with such amazing athletes to Chicago, but this being the city I grew up in adds to the honor of hosting the event here,” said USA Fencing CEO Val Belmonte.

Preliminary action in the individual events will take place May 3, followed by final rounds on May 4. The team competition will be held May 5.
“Fencing is traditionally thought of as an individual sport, and spectators will get to see some amazing bouts from the best athletes in the world, but the team competition is one of our most exciting events because you’re not only fighting for yourself, but to win gold for your country,”
Belmonte said. “We’re looking forward to welcoming these athletes to Chicago and encourage the community to come out and cheer on each of the 30 countries that will be represented.”

The Absolute Fencing Chicago Sabre World Cup will include both past Olympic and world champions as well as athletes vying to represent their countries at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
One of three weapons used in Olympic fencing, the sabre is considered the modern version of the slashing cavalry sword. Bouts between athletes are action-packed, and athletes score points fast as they use both speed and quick thinking to outscore their opponents.
All events are open to the public.
