The U.K. based Boydell & Brewer just announced the publication of Lutoslawski’s Worlds, a collection of English-language essays about Witold Lutosławski and his music. The collection is edited by Lisa Jakelski, Associate Professor or Musicology at the Eastman School of Music and Nicholas Ryland, Head of Undergraduate Programs at the Royal Northern School of Music.
A distinguished group of scholars and previous PMC collaborators—including Stanisław Będkowski, Andrea F. Bohlman, Danuta Gwizdalanka, Lisa Jakelski, Michael L. Klein, Iwona Lindstedt, Wioleta Muras, Katarzyna Naliwajek-Mazurek, Nicholas Reyland, Zbigniew Skowron, Steven Stucky, Adrian Thomas, David Tompkins and Lisa Cooper-Vest (who serves on the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music and will give this 2018 Paderewski Lecture)—also provided substantial contributions to this volume. Their far-ranging essays cover the entirety of Lutosławski’s creative opus and examine the biographical, cultural and historical aspects that influenced the composer’s output.
This substantial, 422-page volume discusses not only on Lutosławski’s most cherished and cerebral concert works but also his popular music, works written for stage and cinema, and compositions for young musicians, allowing the readers to better understand the historical importance of Lutosławski’s entire oeuvre within the context of twentieth century music.
