2017 CHA Scholarship Program kicks off; public housing college students can apply until May 17

CHICAGO (Jan. 17, 2017) – Starting today, CHA residents are encouraged to apply for one of more than 200 college scholarship awards ranging from $1,000 to $2,500.
The 2017 CHA Scholarship application period is now open through May 17, 2017.

In the last three years, CHA has provided support to 534 recipients totaling almost $850,000. Further, more than 80 percent of recent scholarship classes remain enrolled or have graduated, including:
•        86% of the 2015-2016 scholarship class.
•        89% of the 2014-2015 scholarship class.
•        And 81% of the 2013-2014 class.

“This program has grown and flourished over the past three years, and CHA students are the beneficiaries,” said CHA CEO Eugene Jones, Jr. “We encourage all students – whether pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees – to apply for this scholarship. It could make a difference in your college journey.”

Prospective applicants must be listed on a current CHA lease and plan to enroll in an accredited post-secondary institution in the fall of 2017. Applicants can include current high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students continuing their studies, or adults seeking to start a post-secondary program in the fall. Scholarships cannot be applied to any past debt with your institution. Proof of enrollment will be required at the time of scholarship award.

CHA plans to award over 200 scholarship awards ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 based on each applicant’s financial need and academic merit. A 2.0 GPA is required, with a 2.5 GPA or higher recommended for all applicants. If you have previously received an award through this program and will be continuing your studies this fall, you will need to reapply in order to receive sustained support.

Applications can be submitted online until May 17, 2017. All application materials (including transcripts, personal essays) must be received by the deadline of May 17; incomplete applications will not be considered and no exceptions will be made.

If students are enrolled or plan to enroll in one of the Chicago City Colleges, CHA has a separate partnership directly with City Colleges that will allow CHA residents to attend their colleges for little or no cost, after financial aid is applied. Due to this special agreement, CHA residents attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago are not eligible to receive the CHA Scholarship and need not apply.
